Snowdonia Mountains 2011 - ONGOING
- Snowdonia 2011 - ONGOING
Ancient Welsh mountains and valleys over the year - This last 12 months I have become increasingly intrigued by the Welsh hills once again. For many years I concentrated on the sea and the coast of the stunning Isle of Anglesey, partly because I thought my knees wouldn't cope any more! And then I just ended up on one of Wales highest peaks one day, after a walk just extended and extended, and my knees didn't hurt once ! Since that liberating experience I have spend almost every weekend over the last 5 - 6 months re-exploring the mountains, not just those I've done numerous times before as a youth, but loads of the more remote and isolated peaks. It's the solitude I am after, and I stupidly get quite disturbed if I see anyone around which breaks my isolation, my 'aloneness' !
It has been fascinating to realise that I don't need to do 'big peaks' to be happy, to feel at one with the mountains and so on. I have revelled in the softness of some hillsides, and freaked at the rocky drops of others but beyond any of that, is the deep fulfilment about being alone but at one with the landscape, in a very spiritual way. This peace and calm I find up there affects or influences my imagery. The more at peace I am the easier the photography becomes. I am not photographically drawn to the obvious landmarks, but prefer to find my own soul in the subtle simplicity of light, weather and textures on even the barest hillsides. The weather and light are ALWAYS the biggest triggers for my image aking however, and I avoid the hills completely in good weather when just a blue sky ruins everything :-)
I will update this project regularly throughout the year and I am going to upload in reverse order so that the newest images are always on top, unless this proves too impractical.
If you really enjoy my images of these old Welsh hills and very Welsh light, please feel free to comment and share this project wherever possible :-) ?
"Caernarfon Awash" Snowdonia
A stunning burning light from unexpected sunshine burst from under a huge grey blanket of cloud. The spectacle only lasted a few minutes before everything went a dull but rosy pink.
The different layers of clouds stacked high into the sky above Snowdonia make the huge Caernarfon Castle pale into insignificance, though unfortunately not the ugly apartment developments on the old quay side !
