The Palm and Desert Houses date back to the 18th century. The two peculiar places lie within the Schönbrunn Palace complex in Vienna and feature a flora and fauna that are unusual and foreign to the eyes of nobility.
When the late morning sun glistens through the delicate vitreous rooftop, the building appears in a mysterious and dark light which encloses the plants in a bizarre fog. Shadow and light meet to create a fascinating pattern.
Surviving up to the present, the Palm and Desert Houses are the pride of a different era and still reflect the power of an aristocratic family who brought plants and reptiles from as far away as India and South Africa to Central Europe in order to create a uniquely formed botanic paradise.
