In 2004 I found myself in Argentina with time to kill, so I bought a
bus ticket to a region that I’d always wanted to visit – the province of
Salta in the northwest. It was my first trip to the Andes, and has been
followed by several more since then.
The Andes really are an amazing part of
the world. They stretch the length of the South American continent,
although the part I know best straddles northern Argentina, Bolivia and southern Peru. This is a
region where you can find wonders such as the world’s highest city and
deserts above the clouds; and the local people hold traditional fiestas
and celebrations whose origins stretch back to the years before the Spanish conquest.
On that first trip to the Andes I had just one film camera, a Pentax Z-50P, and two lenses – 24mm and 50mm primes. These are my favourite images that I created on that trip.
These photos have also appeared in Andes – my latest ebook at Craft & Vision. You can read more about it at my website
here.
