ABOVE THE MYSTIC CLOUDS
Majestic silent giants perpetually hidden by the clouds guard the lunar landscape of the Ladakh plateau. Located at an average elevation of 3500m and surrounded by such natural bastions as the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges, Ladakh endures extremely harsh winters and almost mild summers. Possibly one of the earliest human settlements, locals have always had to take advantage of the good season to store supplies for the harrowing winter - a time of resting and festivities. Apart from the nomads from nearby Tibet, roaming the territory with their yaks and tents, most of the Ladakh population originate from the first pilgrims who headed toward Mount Kailash, a sacred Tibetan spot both for Buddhists and Hindus. This epic and backbreaking journey did not always lead the devoted men and women to their final destination, as many of them, exhausted by the harsh conditions of the trip, stopped in the Hindus River Valley, never returning to their native lands and giving birth to the first permanent Ladakh settlements.
ABOVE THE MYSTIC CLOUDS is a visual document of how time seems to have stopped on the plateau. Where simplicity, highlighted by common daily gestures and routines, reveals a life energy in which joy and spirituality contribute equally to an existence full of hope, not linked to material happiness.
