Sin Fronteras | images from the rio grande basin
A self assigned project I began shooting this project in 1997 and would like to think its is completed however I can't really say that. The original idea was to travel the full expanse of the Rio Grande from its beginnings in Colorado to its ending into the Gulf of Mexico. Rather ambitious as the river travels just at 3,900 miles. I then reduced the series to include only New Mexico and Texas.
The Rio Grande and its surroundings are at social and environmental tipping points. This brave river once pure and clean now is dumped into by mines in New Mexico and further south towards El Paso and Ciudad Juarez is so polluted that even waking across the river is strongly discouraged. A political border that divides and connects two countries and cultures, the Rio Grande is one of the most unique rivers in the world.
The companion text is from the publication of the same name written by Dr. Jill Hoffman Ph.D, former Executive Director of the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, New Mexico.
