Description
A book of my 2008 journey to military camps KAF and Tarin Kowt .
  • In 2008 I went to Kandahar & Tarin Kowt to gather inspiration for a project. I took this as a huge opportunity to make photos on both military camps.  Some of you may have seen the photos elsewhere on my profile and may have thought that it would be nice to look at them in book form. Well, that's what I thought anyway.
Hence me making a little 7 by 7 inch book to showcase these series.
I've written a few words to illustrate the photos for as far as that's even possible.
If you like what you see, then drop me a message, there's still some books available for 25 euros a piece.
I'll ship to anywhere in the world. The first 10 copies come with a copy of my blog which I've written for my home front. If you're really lucky, you can even get your hands on the few autographed copies left ( there's only 10 with an autograph and I've already sold a few.. so..)

For now, I'll leave you with a few photos of the book itself and a few of my personal favourites of the series.
I'll be looking forward to hear all the feedback I can get on this project!

The front cover of the book
  • An American flag hanging inside the c-17 "Spirit of Georgia" on the way fron Minhad, Arab Emirates to Kandahar, Afghanistan.
  • A decorated Afghan delivery truck, also referred to as a "Jingle Truck" .
  • An armored vehicle making a sharp left during contact practice.
  • The absolutely gigantic mess hall on KAF (Kandahar Airfield).
  • Portrait of a Dutch soldier inside his FOB on Camp Holland, Tarin Kowt. He works as part of the logistical and technical staff in the Dutch army, an interview with him is contained within the book.
  • Playing American football is a favorite evening past time of the US Soldiers on KAF.
You'd almost forget that you're on a military camp as live on camp mimics the outside world very well. With a few coffee places, a games room, a basketball court, indoor fitness accommodations and supermarket loosely sprinkled around camp, it's a harsh reality check to realize that live outside of the gates is dramatically different.

  • When the game is exciting other soldiers from the boardwalk will stop and watch.
  • A mixture of old machines which are left behind from the war between Afghanistan and Russia  take on a whole different look at night. The atmosphere as a whole changes at nightfall. While other soldiers are engaging in relaxing activities, other things only seem to go on under the guise of night making the atmosphere seem a bit surreal.
  • The toilets inside one of the sanitary FOBS are the favorite hang out camel spiders, and offer a place to count down the days on the inside of the toilet doors.
