I began taking photographs for this project in late 2007 and finished in the spring of 2009. I'd grown tired of going out with the camera aimlessly and decided to set myself a couple of projects - Homeland & Coastland. Shooting in my spare time over an extended period allowed me to take my time and concentrate on specific images. Some days I might see something but the light or weather would be wrong; knowing you have something to come back to when things lined up helped define the kinds of images I wanted to capture.
Mostly though I took the opportunity to work on two things: composition and colour. I figured the subject matter would take care of itself and if I took things slowly a coherent set of images for each project might gradually evolve to tell their own story, and evoke a sense of place.
Why the Dublin coastline? I've lived in Dublin all my life and decided it was time to get to know it a bit better. I lived on the south side up until my mid-30s, when I married a north-sider and set up home in that neck of the woods. It took me a couple of years to get used to it, moving from suburban south side to the rural part of the north side, but, after 10 years, it's now home. I guess this project is just my own way of defining some of the boundaries of where I'm from, and at the same time enjoying my hometown.
